LIVERMORE - Department to buy foam suppression system
Thu. Jun 24th 2010

By Donna M. Perry, Staff Writer

Jun 24, 2010 12:00 am

When the truck was purchased there was not enough money to buy a Class A foam system to put out fires, Fire Chief Don Castonguay said.

The truck is all piped for the system, he said. The system and installation is estimated to cost $8,000 to $10,000.

The unit itself will be bought out of this current budget and that is estimated to cost nearly $8,000, Castonguay said.

Installation costs will come out of next year's budget, which begins July 1.

Foam is used in a variety of ways including after a fire is knocked down to stop it from rekindling. It also used for forest fires and is sprayed on buildings near fires to help prevent the flames from spreading, he said.

The foam coats flammable surfaces, preventing contact with oxygen to suppress combustion.
